TUTORIAL - Scripting for Artists
An introduction to the scripting basics in Maya with MEL and Python.
We compare both languages and how to work with the script editor, the echo commands, create shelves and import external files.
It's probably the first time in a long run that I've seen a tutorial pushing Mel on stage.
The mel commands that would be missing in Python are probably, if not second to None, at least very close to None.
You'll miss the high level procedures but as it call the basic api you can recode them in python. and even in the case that it wouldn't be possible you can evaluate mel through python.
For the people reading this, if you are an aspirant maya scripter go for python.
It's still evolving, it's cross plateform and has a huge community support and developement. Your coding workflow will give you the necessary feedback.
Without forgetting to mention that many companies that would have had a Mel based pipeline would actually recode it completely with python so you would rather know python over mel to be able to interact with.
